Benefits of Tea
Tea is probably one of the most unpredictable sources of beneficial plant nutrients. Besides water, tea is the most widely consumed beverage in the world. Green tea is made from the fresh leaves of the tea plant, which are steamed, folded and dried at high temperatures. Black tea is made by first drying the leaves and then folding and drying them.
The plant nutrients in tea, which spark researchers’ excitement, are called flavonoids. There are thousands of flavonoids in plants and many of them have antioxidant properties. This means that they are able to cleanse and deactivate potentially harmful roots, which, if left free in the body, can cause chronic health problems such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, cataracts, inflammation, arthritis and even Alzheimer’s. For example, data from a study in the Netherlands showed that people with higher flavonoid intake had a lower risk of heart disease than those who consumed smaller amounts.
Just one cup of tea provides around 200mg of flavonoids, many of which are released into the drink within the first minute after brewing. However, faster brewing of tea leads to lower levels of flavonoids. Drinking three cups a day for 2 weeks increases the concentration of flavonoids in the blood by 25% and, fortunately, its antioxidant properties are not affected by the addition of milk.
People around the world have been drinking tea daily for centuries. Chinese herbalists have long reported the healing properties of tea, recommending it for a wide variety of ailments, ranging from clearing the voice to aiding digestion and relieving swelling.
